Alice Water Smart - a series of projects aimed at reducing consumption of potable water in Alice Springs, to decrease dependence on the Roe Creek Bore Field which, since commissioning in the 1960's, has been dropping the water level in the aquifer by more than 1m/year. Supported by Australian Government's 'Water for the Future' initiative, Alice Smart aims to reduce water consumption by 220 megalitres/annum (equivalent to 100 Olympic sized swimming pools) by supplementing potable water supply with recycled water for irrigation purposes.

One of the major projects under the Water Smart initiative was upgrading existing recycled water plant at Alice Springs Waste Stabilisation Ponds (WSP) to enable supply of recycled water for unrestricted irrigation purposes. Improved water quality was to comply with Class A recycled water standard according to NT's Recycled Water Management Plan and Validation Guidelines, 2008.

The purpose of this upgrade was to enhance opportunities to utilise recycled water by improving recycled water quality sufficiently to allow unrestricted reuse for irrigation purposes, including irrigating public parks/ovals and to supply recycled water to various commercial operators for outdoor use.
