"The Alice Water Smart Recycled Water Scheme (the Scheme), funded by the Commonwealth was implemented to reduce the dependency on the drinking water supply by some of Alice Spring's commercial water users for irrigation and non-potable purposes.
The 6ML/ day Scheme started development in 2012, achieved Class A+ supply approval in 2014 and is now connecting commercial users. The project to develop the Scheme involved augmenting the current DAF plant with additional gravity filtration and UV disinfection treatment barriers, building a new 2.5ML storage tank, constructing an additional 5 kms of network supply pipework and customer meter arrangements as well as modifying commercial user's site pipework.
Following an initial pilot filtration treatment investigation by Power and Water Corporation (PWC), IVWater Solutions was contracted to assist in finalising a Design and Construct tender treatment solution. IVWater Solutions provided expert advice on full scale treatment solutions, the tender scope. IVWater Solutions also assisted in pre-selecting suitable tenderers for a full-scale treatment package that included gravity or pressure filtration and UV disinfection. The required solution had to also consider the existing underperforming DAF plant and include opportunity to improve its performance along with the new treatment.
IVWater Solutions provided careful advice during the tender process to evaluate the best value for money solutions that balanced the operational and capital requirements to upgrade existing treatment and incorporate new treatment solutions that met the regulatory water quality performance requirements.
In the design phase and early construction phase of the contract IVWater Solutions also provided expert project management advice and early technical engagement with operational staff and contractors.
Optimising the existing DAF treatment and augmenting new treatment under a single Design and Construct contract was complex and achieving a regulatory approved solution within budget was testament to IVWater Solutions' skills, knowledge and experience being applied early in the tender formation and construction phases."
